Leonardo Pisano




My book, The Time Sphere, contains many historical settings and figures.  Leonardo Pisano may not be known by many people, but his contributions have changed the world.

1. Leonardo is known as the greatest European mathematician of the Middle Ages.

2. He is also known as Fibonacci.

3. He was born in Italy around 1200.  But his father was a merchant, so he lived his early years and was educated in North Africa, Algeria.

4. During his years in North Africa, he learned various mathematical theorems and wrote many books on the subject.

5. All though ignorance was prevalent in Europe, Leonardo's work was well received and played a pivotal role in reviving ancient mathematical theorems in Medieval Europe.

6. He introduced the Hindu-Arabic numeral system to Europe; 0-9.  Europe had been currently using Roman numerals.  This new system greatly simplified calculation and became a necessary tool with merchants.

7. Leonardo created the Fibonacci Sequence.  He used mating rabbits to prove this sequence, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55.  Each number is the sum of the two proceeding numbers.  The ratio of these numbers leads to the Golden Ratio, 1.68:1.

What is the Golden Ratio?

  • The Golden Ratio is known by many names; the Golden Mean, the Golden Section,  and the Divine Proportions.  This is due to it being discovered by different people in different times in history.
  • It is believed that the Golden Ratio gives balance and beauty through perfect proportions.
  • It is found in many man made structures like the Great Pyramid, Leonardo's Vitruvian man, the Last Supper and Mona Lisa.  It has also been used by many other artists, including Michelangelo.
  • It is also seen in nature through the natural patterns of flower petals, pinecones, tree branches, spiral galaxies and many more.
