Why the Indie Book World Needs to Get a Little More Mainstream

Why the Indie Book
World Needs to Get a
Little More Mainstream

 by A.E. Albert

“The virtue of books is to be readable.”
–Ralph Waldo Emerson

know it's called self-publishing, however, I don't think this means we have to do it all on our own.

Well, perhaps we shouldn't.

As most of us know, writing a book is a team effort and must be seen from a business perspective.  As in any business, tasks should be delegated to the best person for the job.

We writers need to look at what we're attempting to accomplish as a business.  So why are so many of us editing our own books and designing our book covers when most of us clearly don't possess the necessary skills to do so?

The Bottom Line

Of course, we all know the reason.  It's costs money.  Sometimes a lot of money.  We've all heard the saying; it takes money to make money

Building your author brand is no different than any other business.  Taking ourselves seriously means investing that business.

When we're immersed in a good story it's amazing how reality just slips away.  Our empirical senses seems to fade and we can only experience the world through our mind's eye. The author's world.

A sudden misspelling or inappropriate use of wording can jostle us from this world that seemed so real not a moment before.

Of course we all judge a book by it's cover!

I won't read a book based on it's cover, but an intriguing cover does draw me to pick it up. Neither does poor editing equate a badly written story.

However, it won't get our work taken seriously or more importantly, talked about. And word of mouth is still the best form of book promotion out there.

The digital revolution has enabled millions of would be authors to publish their work on a global platform.

As we all know, the backlash of this is a saturated market.  We need to stand out. Mediocre editing and design won't get your work noticed.

Publishing today is war and we need a battle plan.

  1. An excellent article, Aimee, and I agree with every point you make, It takes money, hard work and serious commitment. And it shouldn't come as a surprise, because everything that's worth anything does.

    1. I tried to avoid the whole money issue for a long time. Finally, I knew that I had to invest in myself. I had to embrace the concept that writers can't just see the world from a creative perspective, but also a business one. As I set out to learn as much as I could, I soon realized that creativity is actually a big component to any business model.
