Author Interview: J.C. Hulsey by A.E. Albert

How old were you when you knew you wanted to be a writer?

I have been writing since I was in my early twenties.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I found out someone I knew was a published author and decided if they can do it, then so can I.

What have you written?

I now have 26 Western Novels including Western Short stories. I have one True Crime, 5 Kid’s stories and one about my 97 year old Grandpa called The Oldest Coon Hunter in Somervell Co.

Is there a message in your book and/or books?

If you mean, was I trying to have an underlying message. No. I don’t have any particular message.

Who is your favorite character from one of your stories?

It’s extremely hard to pick one.

What books and/or writers have influenced you the most?

There again, there are so many, that I can’t nail down just one or two.

How do you conquer writer’s block?

Just ride it out. My characters won’t let me alone for very long.

What has been your greatest challenge when writing?

Having enough hours in the day to get it all done.

How do you rejuvenate after a writing session?

I don’t guess I understand that question. Writing is rejuvenating.

What is your funniest experience in writing?

There are so many. I have no control over my characters. They will lead me in a completely different direction than what I had planned

What are you working on right now?

I have four or five stories going right now with a lot of others whirling around inside my head.

What have you learned and do you have any advice for other authors?

I think everyone has a story inside their head and they all want to share it with someone. I would tell them emphatically to do it. Write it down, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Don’t let anyone or anything stop you.

What famous person would you like to meet? Why?

I really don’t have any desire to meet anyone in particular. When you get my age it doesn’t make any difference who I meet.

If you could go anywhere in the world? Where?

There again, my desires are simple. I’m happy where I’m at.

What is your favorite book quote?

I’m going to use one from one of my books. Jed tells Orville. “If I don’t do it, then who will?”

is a young man with a cross to bear. On one hand, he’s a Born Again Christian, on the other hand he’s a ruthless killer when given no other choice. He travels through the states and territories, ridding the towns of evil when the local authorities can’t –or won’t- do anything about it.

J.C. Hulsey has lived in Midlothian, Texas for thirty years. He's a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He has been married for 55 years. He enjoys Western movies and TV Shows, (especially the older ones) and reading about Mail-Order Brides.
