The Duke Conspiracy By: Wendy May Andrews
@aealbert23

Title: The Duke Conspiracy
Genre: Sweet Regency Romance

How old were you when you knew you wanted to be a writer?

When I was about 12 or 13 I had an aunt who was jokingly coming up with pen names for me. Her theory was that I was such an avid reader, surely I would turn into a writer. It turns out she was right but it took many years before I was truly bitten by the writing bug. I decided I wanted to be a writer in 2007. But I was old enough that I most likely wouldn’t have told you my age ;-)

What inspired you to write your first book?

I was inspired by my husband’s challenge. He’s not as interested in reading as I am and would feel quite ignored when I would get absorbed into a story. One day he said, “Why don’t you write a book instead of reading them all the time.” I didn’t think I could, but I decided to give it a try. Several manuscripts later, I’m still learning.

What have you written?

I write sweet/clean Regency Romance. I have two books published. My first, Tempting the Earl, was published in 2010. That is the result of my husband’s challenge. My most recent manuscript, The Duke Conspiracy, just released March 17 from Clean Reads (formerly Astraea Press).

Is there a message in your book and/or books?

My books are a light, fun read. The main message is that you can make your own happily ever after happen.

Who is your favorite character from one of your stories?

I love Rose, my heroine from The Duke Conspiracy. She is so determined to do the right thing, if only she can figure out what that is. Her path to happily ever after is rather fraught but she holds herself together with dignity.

What actor do you see playing them in a movie?

While I may have had actors in mind for my characters when I started the book, they have developed into their own people in my mind and I cannot pick another image. But the model on my cover is perfect for Rose.

What books and/or writers have influenced you the most?

My favorite author of all time, Georgette Heyer, influences my genre choice and style of writing the most.

What is your favorite book?

These Old Shades, by Georgette Heyer. Followed closely by Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery – my favorite until I discovered Georgette Heyer.

How do you conquer writer’s block?

Thankfully, I’ve never suffered from writer’s block. Some days I cannot bear to sit at my desk, but then I go for a walk and think about my story and then I can’t wait to get home to write it all down.

What has been your greatest challenge when writing?

Balancing all the rest of my life with my writing. We all only have 24 hours in each day...

How do you rejuvenate after a writing session?
Sleeping, reading, watching tv, going for a long walk with my husband. I find writing to be fun and relaxing for the most part, but sometimes I need to just relax.

What are you working on right now?

I have a few projects on the go, I started a manuscript for National Novel Writing Month which is about 2/3 finished. I also have some completed manuscripts that need some polish before submitting them to my publisher.

What have you learned and do you have any advice for other authors?

I have learned that there is still so much to learn. And thankfully there are so many sources and resources to help you learn. Characterization, point of view, setting – these have been some of my weaknesses. I’m still a work in progress. My advice to other authors is to stick with it. Thankfully our industry is filled with lovely people ready to help.

If you could go anywhere in the world? Where?

I would love to go back to England to see more of the places my characters would know. All my books are set in Regency era England and there are still many old buildings and homes staged as they would have been 200 years ago. I need to see them with my own eyes to make my descriptions more vivid.

Or a week in a sunny destination, like the Caribbean, with my husband would be lovely, too.

A spying debutante, a duke, and a conspiracy. Can love be found despite their feud?

The Duke Conspiracy is a 96,000 word Sweet Regency Romance

Miss Rosamund Smythe, the only daughter of a baron diplomat, is finding the Season to be a dead bore. After her stint at spying while in Vienna with her father, she wants a higher purpose in life than “just” being a wife.

His Grace, Alexander Milton, the Duke of Wrentham, wants a quiet life with a “proper” lady as his wife after the tumultuous childhood he had. His parents had fought viciously, lied often, and Alex secretly wonders if he was even his father’s son.

Rose and Alex grew up on neighboring estates and have been best friends since she was four years old but a family feud has torn their friendship apart.

At a Society event Rose overhears a plot to entrap Alex into a marriage of convenience. Her loyalty to their old friendship as well as her knowledge of the conspirator, Sir Jason Broderick, causes Rose to overcome her aversion to Wrentham in order to warn him of his danger. Alex’s complicated childhood has caused him to despise all forms of deception so Rose avoids telling him how she knows so much about Sir Broderick.

When Rose is abducted by Sir Broderick to prevent her interference, Alex must deal with his own conflicted feelings to help her rescue herself. Can they claim their happily ever after despite the turmoil?

Wendy May Andrews has been reading whatever she could get her hands on since the age of five. She has been writing for almost as long but hasn’t been sharing those stories with anyone but her mother until recently. Wendy lives in Toronto with her own real-life hero. When not writing or reading, they love to travel wherever the mood takes them.
