Why I Wrote My Book

Why I Wrote My Book

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else’s life."- Steve Jobs

Was it always at the back of mind?  Actually, no. Of course, I had always thought that writing a book would be an amazing accomplishment. But quite frankly, for someone else.

I had always done well in writing and have been told by others I should write a book.  My response was to laugh and say, 'I'm a reader, not a writer.'  I think every writer comes to that place, that dividing line drawn in the sand.  The question is, why do we cross over it?

Eyeing The Cliff, But Looking For A Parachute

In my case, my job was a determining factor.  I'm a Child & Youth Worker by trade and it was a very stressful job.  I loved it, but it was stressful.  I needed something creative to take my mind off my work life.  So I thought, hey, why not try and write a book.

At this point, it was purely a hobby.  In fact, months would go by between chapters.  Every time, I would look at the mess on the computer screen and think, what have I done?

One Toe Over the Precipice And Looking Down

One night, I went to bed exhausted.  As I lay there relishing my cool sheets, a voice told me to get up and work on my my book.  I actually argued with this voice, until I got up, threw off the covers and begrudgingly began to write.

Strangely enough, it would be a few months before I analyzed that late night occurrence.  But I did know from then on, my book was beyond me.

Throwing Caution To The Wind And Ready To Jump

After the completion of the next chapter, I knew without a doubt that this book needed to be written.  Maybe only my family would ever read it. Who knows?

Why did I write my book?  I think every writer's answer is the same on some fundamental level.

We are compelled to.

Why did you write your book?  Let me know.
