How to Obtain an EIN

How to Obtain an EIN

by A.E. Albert

Every eBook retailer requires a W8BEN form from non-US citizens

This form in turn requires an EIN number.  If you don't fill out this form, you'll have to give 30% of your book earnings to the US government. But the good news is, it's not that difficult.

Complete Your Tax Info in 3 Steps:

  1. First, obtain an EIN number.  I highly recommend calling the US government directly (267-941-1099).  The wait time is about 30 minutes and it takes only 10 minutes to get your EIN number.  If the IRS worker tells you to fill out another form, call back until one gives you a number.  Yes, this may cost you in long distance charges, but that's better then waiting 6-10 weeks for it by mail.
  2. Next, go to the IRS website and download a copy of the W8BEN form.
  3. You can fill out this form directly on Amazon.  However, one must be sent to Smashwords and possibly other online retailers.
I know it's intimidating, but getting an EIN number is surprisingly simple.  Don't put it off.
