Staying True to Your Vision When Writing a Book

Staying True to Your
Vision When Writing
A book

by A.E. Albert

"I will not hide my tastes or aversions. I will so trust that what is deep is holy, that I will do strongly before the sun and moon whatever only rejoices me, and the heart appoints."

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Trends are a natural side effect of popular culture.  Especially in the arts & entertainment world.  I'm a creative writer.  So is it really being creative if you write a book according to current trends?

I love kids books, which is why I wrote a book for children. However, I've noticed lately that books are gearing more and more to the sensational.

Ready...Set...Action!  Wait?  That's It!

I read one recently and the action began on the first page.  Yes, I love action too.  But by the end of the book I really hadn't connected with the characters.

When they were victorious, I didn't rejoice with them.  The climax didn't have the impact it should have.  Yes, the book was very well written. However, it was because I wasn't given a chance to get to know the characters.

I think writers believe that everything needs to be a series and character development with happen naturally along the way.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not correcting an author's writing process.

The problem is, is that more and more action/adventure books are being expected to be packed with adrenaline as of the first page.

I'm an action junkie myself.  But any book of this genre that is only composed of those characteristics don't stay with me.

Think about it.  How does Walt Disney manage to put a tear in our eye in only an hour and twenty minutes?  It's because they go for the emotional throat.  But it works.  We the audience have connected.

Take A Risk, Take A Gamble...Be Yourself!

I want that connection with every book I read. Those are the ones that stay with us.  When I wrote my book, I was determined to write a book I would love.

Needless to say, this also means not everyone is going to like it.  But I wanted to stay true to myself.

Trends be damned!

How can we call ourselves creative writers if we don't write what and how our instincts demand us to?  We need to stop aiming for visibility and potential profit by following trends.

Our aim should always be to re-invent them.

  3. Fifty agents in, and still not one has asked to take a look at The Representative.. I've had to pay it the hardest, the price for not keeping with trends.

I don't hold grudges though, to do so would be incorrect; The Representative "is" deserving, but for the sake of the general system at large I must recognise the right of others to refuse to recognise it.

And.. on another level, The Representative isn't special; in keeping with yesterday's talk (relating to your post about writing, and its being either "a choice or a calling"), wherein I employed the thinking mode of breaking things down, in its wholeness, yes, TR is different, but in breaking it down, it's not apart from other fictions at all.

Just to persevere, is the goal.. Just keep querying, just keep advertising, over time amalgamating your learned means of doing so more and more.

Another source of pleasure, Aimee: your post!

    1. I know the feeling. But Gone with the Wind was rejected over 100 times. You're right, it's all about perseverance.

    2. But I fear that I can't persevere anymore, that's the truth.. I've struggled, mentally of late; The Representative can either get recognition, or it cannot get recognition, all however that ever mattered was its getting written.

Now all I crave is maintaining onto my mental well-being.. and visiting your site is what's helping me to this goal.

  5. Good authors are always care about the feedback from the readers, so they first know the perception of the readers then they will write accordingly in this way they help to promote themselves in a better way.
